About Croydon’s figures
In the London ranking of Band D, Croydon is 2nd, behind only Kingston upon Thames. Its 2026/27 charge of £2,599.91 is 23.0% over the 32-borough mean of £2,113.85, and even against England as a whole, where Croydon ranks 36th of 296, it is 7.8% above the simple mean of English councils.
Because the Greater London Authority asks every borough for the same £510.51, and that precept already takes in London's Met and fire brigade, its weight on a bill depends on what the borough adds. Croydon adds a relatively large £2,089.40 of its own (80.4%), so the GLA's portion shrinks to 19.6%: the 2nd smallest in the capital.
Twelve months ago Band D cost £2,480.48. The latest increase, £119.43, works out at 4.8%.
The borough's valuation list counts 169,310 homes, making it the 19th biggest English council by housing stock. Bands C and D account for most of them: 52,890 homes in Band C (31.2%) and 42,830 in Band D (25.3%), together 56.5%. Band A is unusual here, at 2.7%. This year Band C homes pay £2,311.03, Band A homes £1,733.27, and the 660 homes in Band H £5,199.82.
Croydon's tax base, 138,290 Band D equivalents, ranks 4th in London; the return assumes collection of 98%.
Band D is the band the national tables use to compare councils. In Croydon it is £2,599.91 a year. Across the 296 councils in England the simple average of Band D is £2,410.97, and 260 of them charge less than Croydon.
The dearest Band D in England is Dorset at £2,765.02; the cheapest is Wandsworth at £1,028.21.
