About Wandsworth’s figures
Nowhere in England is Band D cheaper than in Wandsworth. The 2026/27 charge is £1,028.21, under half the simple average of English councils, £2,410.97, and the borough's Band A, at £685.47, is the lowest Band A in the official tables for England, Scotland and Wales combined.
What makes the Wandsworth bill unusual is its balance. The borough keeps £517.70, or 50.3%. Almost all of the rest, £510.51 (49.7%), is the Greater London Authority precept, which includes the Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade. That precept is identical in each London borough, yet in no other does it account for as much of Band D as it does here.
This year's change was modest as well. Band D went from £997.75 to £1,028.21, a rise of £30.46 or 3.1%; counted from the smallest upwards, that is the 10th lowest increase in England.
Wandsworth's housing leans towards the upper bands. Of its 159,480 properties, 18,420 fall in bands G and H, 11.6% of the total, and Band C (23.5%) only narrowly outnumbers Band D (22.2%). Even a Band H home pays £2,056.42, which is less than the Band D charge in 284 of England's 296 councils. The borough's tax base, 147,999 Band D equivalents, is the 3rd largest in London.
Band D is the band the national tables use to compare councils. In Wandsworth it is £1,028.21 a year. Across the 296 councils in England the simple average of Band D is £2,410.97, and none of them charge less than Wandsworth.
The dearest Band D in England is Dorset at £2,765.02; the cheapest is Wandsworth at £1,028.21.
