About Westminster’s figures

Westminster's average Band D for 2026/27 is £1,049.55, the second lowest anywhere in England; out of 296 council areas only Wandsworth charges less. The rise on 2025/26 was £30.55, or 3.0%.

Almost half of each bill goes elsewhere. The Greater London Authority takes £510.51, 48.6% of Band D, and that precept pays for the capital's police force, the Metropolitan Police, and for its fire service. The council's own element is £537.74, barely more than the GLA sum. A single parish precept is also recorded, adding £1.30 when spread over the whole city.

Westminster's homes sit high up the valuation scale. The most common band is G, as in only one other English council area, with 24,630 of 132,030 properties, closely followed by E with 24,360, while 17,280, or 13%, are in Band H. Only one other council area in England has a bigger proportion of its homes in that top band. Even so, the average Band H charge here, £2,099.10, is below the Band D charge in 283 of the 296 English areas. Band A, at the opposite extreme, has just 1,640 properties.

With so many properties valued above Band D, the tax base, 154,862.86 Band D equivalents, is larger than the count of properties on the list. Measured per property, only three English areas have a bigger base. In absolute size it is the 11th largest in England. The council plans on collecting 96% of the tax due.
