About Wiltshire’s figures

Wiltshire has 252 parishes, more than any English council area apart from North Yorkshire, Somerset and Dorset. Taken together, their precepts come to an average of £195.41 on a Band D bill for 2026/27, 7.6% of the total. Only Bolsover and Cornwall have a higher average parish charge.

Because that parish sum is averaged across the whole council area, the parish line on a real bill depends on the parish a home is in. The overall average Band D is £2,571.78, up £128.38 (5.3%) on 2025/26, putting Wiltshire 52nd highest of 296 English areas. Setting the parishes aside, the council's own charge is £1,981.15, while police add £298.27 and fire £96.95, the two together making up 15.4% of Band D.

Wiltshire Council's tax base, 196,516.37 expressed as Band D homes, is the seventh largest in England. Its 234,170 properties are spread across many bands: 59,100 are in Band C, the largest group, 43,040 in Band B, 41,450 in Band D and 31,870 in Band E, with 27,080 in Band A.

A Band C home is charged £2,286.03 on average. In Band H, which has 1,380 properties, the average is £5,143.56. At the bottom of the scale, a Band A home pays £1,714.52, and the tax base works out at 0.84 Band D equivalents per property on the list. Collection is expected to reach 99%. For scale, North Yorkshire has 665 parishes, Somerset 328 and Dorset 262.
